Rootbeer, Bottled in Bondage

March 14, 2010

Christmas Root Beer Label

Being an artist in New Mexico around Christmas time presents a special dilemma. Money is scarce, time is short and the competition between artists to give the coolest gifts is intense. The Christmas Beer label above was a inspired collaboration. I brewed the beer, the label was drawn by a friend after a long, cheap wine-sponsored work session. I bottled, he slapped on the labels. I won the contest hands down that year.

If you aren’t lucky enough to get a six pack of “Old Slugbait” for Christmas,  you can find the perfect homemade brew at Darrel’s Root Beer Stand in Winslow, Arizona. It’s one of my permanent stops on the long haul from the West Coast to New Mexico. One or two beers later and I can face the Mojave Desert.

One caveat: Call (928) 289-2891) before making a special trip because they do close at random, for random lengths of time and for many holidays.
