Black Iron Descansos, Northern New Mexico ~ Karen Rivera

Driving through New Mexico, roadside shrines dot the highways, marking the places where fatal accidents have occurred. The privately installed and maintained memorials are usually composed of temporary and simply carved wooden crosses decked with colorful artificial  flowers, glittery angels or Harley Davidson memento moris left by the victim’s families. Some unspoken reverence lets the seasonally decorated shrines rest mostly undisturbed by vandals.

This beautifully executed wrought iron shrine commemorates 3 lost lives with touching permanence. The Christmas luminarios, placed 2 years after the tragedy, are brightly colored and covered with  hand printed personal notes.
