South American Smoothies ~ Brazilian Batidas for Everyone

The first and only Batida I’d ever had was at Bishop’s Lodge outside of Santa Fe. 10 years after my tenure in on the grill in the Lodge’s kitchens, I sipped one asa a guest on the hottest day of a wretchedly hot July.

Until last night, I’d never tried to make these yummy fruity Brazilian inspired drinks but the incessant rain, wind and mud required action.  Brazilian Batidas are made with cachaça ~ distilled from sugar cane ~~ with goodies like fresh crushed slushy pineapple, seeded watermelon, fresh oj and coconut milk.  Wowie-Zowie. They make being adult enough to drink these a pleasure.

I tried, and adored, Joann’s recipe with the first of the season seedless organic watermelons from the Ashland Co-op. I bet they’d be good with cantalope, too.
