San Juan Hot Red and Green Chili Hush Puppies

Hushpuppies are another one of my weaknesses. This recipe, with both red and hot green chili, is an easy and colorful alternative to sopapillas.

For a truly wicked game day treat, serve these just out of the fryer with side of pico de gallo and chili con queso to dip them in.

San Juan Hot Red and Green Chili Hush Puppies
¾ c. cornmeal
1/4 c whole wheat flour
3 tsp baking powder
½ tsp garlic powder (or 1 clove finely minced fresh)
1 egg
½ c milk
1 green onion, finely minced
1 tsp hot red chili
1 tsp salt
½ c chopped, peeled, seeded hot or extra hot green chili

Snowdrift shortening for frying

Mix cornmeal, flour, baking powder and garlic powder together. Beat in egg and milk with a fork. Mix in onion and green chili.

Drop by tablespoon into hot fat. Brown on one side, turn and brown on the other.

Makes about 20 pups.
