Wortley Hotel ~ “No Guest Gunned Down in Over 100 Years”

September 2, 2010

The last meal I ate at the Wortley Hotel was in the summer of 1976 when I drove through Lincoln in search of the legendary Hondo Valley Cherry Cider.

Wortley Hotel Menu, 1976

The menu and hours of service look much more interesting now:

Our irregular hours are whenever else the chef feels like cooking (and he really likes to cook). You can get breakfast almost any day when we have overnight guests. We are a bed and breakfast and we have to heat up the grill anyway. If you are a guest, we can feed you at night, so no need to worry, you wont go to bed hungry. We reserve the right to fish in the morning on days when we have no guests. All hours are subject to change at the chef’s whim.

The historic Wortley Hotel, formerly owned by Sheriff Pat Garrett, is located in scenic Lincoln, New Mexico and as the new owners would like to point out:

  • We no longer feed prisoners.
  • The food is much better these days.
  • Our motto, “No Guests Gunned Down in Over 100 Years”.

This post is a hoot! Is the Wortley still in business?

Yes, it’s still there and going strong. It’s across from the courthouse that held Billy the Kidd. And don’t miss the Smokey Bear Restaurant in Capitan when you are down that way. I remember the original “Smokey Burgers” from the same trip. Now they sponsor an annual “Smokey Bear” fun run in July that I hope to enter next summer.
