Kewa (formerly known as Santo Domingo) Pueblo Declared a State Disaster Due to Hail

November 3, 2010

5/3/2010 Update:

Indian Country News has an update on the Kewa Pueblo disaster.

October 10, 2010

Morning vendors  at Kewa Pueblo hours before the storm as I made the traditional stop to fill the gas tank, pick up a pair of earrings and some sweet bread before heading home.

According to the Santa Fe New Mexican, 90% of the 600 homes on Kewa Pueblo have been damaged by golf ball sized hail and serious flooding. Holes were punched through windows and roofs, leaving both the old and the new pueblo open to the elements and flooded. Last night, The Governor’s office finally declared a disaster for the Pueblo, making state funds and the New Mexico National Guard available for help.

Video of the damage

Days later, the damage is worse.  A foot of hail melted, leaving mold growing on the walls, furniture and clothing. Dirt roads and housing foundations have been washed away. Volunteers spent the weekend pulling out carpet and wallboard and moving reluctant members of the tribe into tribal office buildings. Crops, which the pueblo relies on to bring in the income to survive the winter, have been flattened. There will be no harvest this year and no planting next spring until the fencing is rebuilt.

What Can You Do?

Hands-on Help: If you have a home for a displaced family or want to help with rebuilding, call 505-465-2214, ext. 252. The University of New Mexico’s Medical Reserve Corps and the Native Health Initiative are already hard at work.
Donations: If you can afford to donate, deposit your donations at any Wells Fargo bank. Be sure to specifiy that you want it to go to the  Kewa Relief Fund. The Pueblo is also in need of  cleaning and roofing supplies, tarps, protective face masks, latex and work gloves, nonperishable food, diapers, formula, new clothing, linens and blankets. You can drop off items at the Kewa Pueblo Community Center.
