Northern New Mexico’s Benedictine Monks’ Beer Makes the LA Times

The LA Times has found one of New Mexico’s best kept and tastiest secrets.

Monks’ Ale, made by Abbey Beverage Company will soon be made at the brewery under construction at Christ in the Desert Monastery. Along with Monks’ Wit, a wheat beer seasoned with coriander and orange peel, brewing beer is a delicious development of the Benedictine motto “ora et labora,” a Latin phrase meaning “prayer and work.”

For those beer lovers who can’t  make the the long, dusty, potholed thirteen mile pilgrimage through the serenity and peace of the Monastery’s dirt road offers, the Monastery is now shipping its seasonal brews out of state. Pennsylvania is already an outlet for Monk’s Ale.

The Monastery of Christ in the Desert, Abiquiu, New Mexico, was founded in 1964 by Fr. Aelred Wall with monks of Mount Savior Monastery. Christ in the Desert is located in  Chama Canyon in northwestern New Mexico outside of the village of Abiquiu. It is a fascinating blend of sustainable systems including passive solar, straw bale buildings and medieval silence.

And in the spring, you’ll be able get a locally brewed beer to take home.
