Santa Fe County Sheriff Greg Solano Admits Thefts and Resigns

Santa Fe County Sheriff Greg Solano resigned Wednesday and admitted selling thousands of dollars of county property and selling items on eBay for personal profit. The Santa Fe New Mexican’s article detailed the ongoing thefts. He has yet to be taken in custody.

Community comments have been scathing.

Solano was also in charge of the investigation in allegations of theft and fraud in the county’s Public Works Department involving Advantage Asphalt that has been ongoing since early May 2010 that has yet to produce any charges.

The Albuquerque Journal confirms that the Santa Fe County Commission has sworn in Undersheriff Robert Garcia as the interim sheriff until he takes over January 1.

Solano, currently serving as treasurer of the New Mexico Lottery Board of Directors after being appointed by Gov. Bill Richardson in August, has promised to make restitution.

UPDATE: Solano reportedly resigned from his position as treasurer of the New Mexico Lottery Board of Directors Tuesday.
